Jasper-Pulaski
Each fall, Jasper–Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area comes alive as Sandhill Cranes gather by the thousands during their annual migration, offering nonstop opportunities for photography from first light to last. At sunrise, cranes lift off from the marsh in rolling waves, wings catching the early light as families and small groups head out to feed—perfect for dramatic flight images and layered compositions against misty fields. Throughout the day, cranes interact in the open grasslands, bugling, sparring, and performing their iconic courtship dances, with bows, jumps, and wing displays that reveal the personality behind the spectacle. As evening approaches, the energy builds again, culminating at sunset when flocks return to roost, circling low over the wetlands as the sky ignites with color. From intimate behavioral moments to sweeping scenes filled with motion, sound, and atmosphere, Jasper–Pulaski delivers a complete migration experience that few places in the Midwest can match.
