The eagles at Conowingo Dam are one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most spectacular wildlife sights, especially during the late fall and early winter migration. Drawn by the steady flow of fish pushed through the dam’s turbines, dozens of Bald Eagles gather along the riverbanks, perched in trees, soaring overhead, and diving with incredible speed to snatch fish from the water. The mix of resident adults, roaming juveniles, and migratory birds creates constant action—chases, mid-air battles over fish, dramatic swoops, and plenty of photographic opportunities. For wildlife lovers and photographers alike, Conowingo has become a premier location to observe these powerful birds up close, often just a few dozen yards from the shoreline.
